Discovering the Quiet Beauty of Xiamen: A Gem Off China’s Coast

Introduction

Nestled on the southeastern coast of China, Xiamen is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors but offers a unique charm that begs exploration. We recently spent two days in this coastal city and were amazed at how it balances modern development with deep-rooted cultural heritage.

Exploring Gulangyu Island

One of our favorite spots was Gulangyu Island, accessible by ferry from the mainland. The island is famous for its colorful colonial buildings and peaceful streets. We arrived early to catch a serene sunrise over the sea, which painted the sky in shades of pink and orange.

The Beauty of Nanputuo Temple

A short drive away lies Nanputuo Temple, an important Buddhist site that offers a profound contrast to the island’s western counterparts. The temple is serene and filled with locals who come to pray; it’s truly a place where you can find tranquility.

Local Flavors at Zhangxi Road

For culinary delights, we recommend heading to Zhangxi Road in Xiamen’s old城区. Here, street vendors offer traditional snacks like oyster omelets and sugarcane jellies that are both delicious and quintessentially local.

Staying at Qilianshan Resort

Our stay was particularly memorable as we chose the Qilianshan Resort. Surrounded by lush greenery, this resort offers a perfect escape from city life. The staff is friendly and eager to share insights about Xiamen’s lesser-known attractions.

Reflections on Travel

Traveling often feels like an exploration of the unknown, but sometimes it’s the familiar comforts that make all the difference. In Xiamen, we found a perfect blend of ancient traditions and modern life that resonated deeply with our wanderlust.

Practical Tips for Travelers

When planning your trip to Xiamen, consider avoiding peak seasons as it can be quite crowded. The best time to visit is from March to May or September to November when the weather is pleasant and fewer tourists are present.
Transportation: Flights are available to Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport, and local buses and taxis are easily accessible.
Dress Code: Since the city has a mild climate, lightweight and breathable clothing is recommended. Don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen as the sun can be strong.
